Adding, setting up and managing products

When you have the responsibility of managing an online shop, it is crucial and essential to add products and/or services to your catalogue. Of course, if these online products are missing, there is nothing you can sell to your customers.

Woocommerce Adding products is a fairly straightforward process, but there are still a few things to consider.

Simply set up woocommerce products

Step 1: Setting general product information

  1. Enter your product title. (1)
  2. Enter your product description. (2)
  3. Fill in your product images. (3)
  4. Enter additional product images (optional). (4)
  5. Enter the product category (optional). (5)
  6. Fill in the product details (more info below). (6)

Step 2: Setting the price

  1. Scroll to "Product data".
  2. Check that next to Product details it says "Simple product". (1)
  3. If not, select "Simple product" in the dropdown. (1)
  4. Under the "General" tab (2) you can enter the price in the "Regular price" field (3).

Step 3: Set stock (optional)

  1. Scroll to "Product data".
  2. Click on the "Stock" tab.
  3. Optional: SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) (1): A term used to denote unique products in a product range. (Example: WS01 could stand for WooShirt 01).
  4. Activate "Stock management". (2)
  5. Enter the "number" (3) in that you have in stock
  6. Select what to do when stock runs out. (4)
    1. Do not allow: Customer cannot buy the product until stock is replenished.
    2. Allow, but inform customer: Customer can buy the product but will receive a notification that it is out of stock.
    3. Allow: The customer will be able to buy this product.
  7. Optional: set a "Low stock threshold" (5) in. If the stock is lower than this number, you will receive a notification.

Step 4: Setting shipping methods (optional)

  1. Scroll to "Product data".
  2. Click on the "Shipping methods" tab.
  3. Set the weight of your product. (1)
  4. Set the dimensions of your product. (2)
  5. Shipping class is used by certain shipping methods to group similar products. (3)

Step 5: Set related products (optional)

Here you can add products for upsell and cross-sell.

  1. Scroll to "Product data".
  2. Click on the "Related products" tab.
  3. Upsell: Recommending products that are just slightly better or just slightly more expensive than the current product. (1)
  4. Cross-sell: Recommend products that are often bought together with the current product. (2)

In this example, the current product is "knives". These are often bought together with spoons and forks.


Variable product setting

Step 1: Set product type

  1. Click on "Product data" and select "Variable product".

Step 2: Setting properties

  1. Click on the "Properties" tab. (1)
  2. Click on "Add new item". (2)
  3. Enter at "Name" (3) enter the name of the product feature as it should be displayed on the website (e.g. "colour" or "size").
  4. Then, under "Values", enter (4) enter the various possibilities, separated by a | . So to fill in colours, type "black | white | red", for example.
  5. Make sure the boxes at (5) "show on product page" not ticked and "use for variations" well (assuming you want to use this property for variations).
  6. If you want to add multiple properties, go through numbers 2 to 5 for each property.
  7. Remember to press "save properties" (6) click.

Step 3: Setting variations

  1. Click on the "Variations" tab. (1)
  2. Click on "Generate variations" (2) and click "ok".
  3. Variations are now created for all properties. There can be quite a lot of them, because in our example, variations are created for the colour Red in size Small, the colour Red in size Medium, the colour Red in size Large, ... In total, we now have 9 variations (namely 3 colours x 3 sizes).
  4. Click on a number on the left (e.g. #1160, #1160 etc) (3) to open the variation. There, you can edit all the properties for the particular variation, such as price, dimensions, weight and a custom image. Only the price (4) is, however mandatory.
  5. If the price is the same for all variations you can also use the dropdown menu at the top (5) "set normal prices". You can then set a price for all variations at once. Here you can also set other elements.
  6. If desired, you can also set a default value for each property (6). It will be used by default unless the customer chooses a different value.

Setting grouped products

Step 1: Set product type

  1. Click on "Product data" and select "Grouped product".

Step 2: Setting up a group

  1. Click on the "Related products" tab. (1)
  2. In the field next to "Grouped products" (2) you can add simple products you want to group.
