How to integrate Google Analytics on your website
Tips 'n tricks about the web, digital trends, and online marketing
The success of a website is not just about beautiful design or great content. What really matters is how well you understand your audience and how you can use those insights to optimise your website. This is where Google Analytics comes in. It is a powerful and free utility that allows you to see how visitors behave on your website, where they come from and what interests or does not interest them.
But how do you make sure Google Analytics is running properly on your website? No worries, we take you step by step through the integration process.
Step 1: Create a Google Analytics account
The first step is to create a new GA4-property, which will collect data from your website.
- Go to Google Analytics and log in with your Google account.
- Click the cog icon in the bottom left to go to the Administrator page.
- Under the Account column, choose the account to which you want to associate the new GA4 profile (or create a new one if you don't have one yet).
- In the Property column, click Create Property.
- Enter the name of your website, select your time zone and currency.
- Scroll down and choose Google Analytics 4 as the type of property you want to create.
Once you've done this, you now have a GA4 profile that allows you to use Google's modern analytics capabilities.
Step 2: Generate the Google Analytics 4 measurement code
After you create the property, you need to obtain the measurement code to place on your website. This code collects and sends data to Google Analytics.
After creating your property, you will be redirected to the Data Streams page. Here, click Web to create a new data stream for your website. Enter the URL and name of your website and click Create Stream.
Step 3: Add the tracking code to your website
Now that you have the tracking code, it's time to install it on your website. How you do this depends on the platform you use for your website. We discuss some of the most common options here.
1. For WordPress users:
If you have a WordPress site, adding the tracking code is quite easy:
- Via a plugin: Install a plugin such as "Insert Headers and Footers" or "MonsterInsights". These plugins provide an easy way to add the tracking code without having to dive into the HTML manually.
- Add manually: Don't want to use plugins? Then go to "View" > "Editor" in your WordPress dashboard and open your theme's header.php. Add the tracking code just above the closing tag and save.
2. For other platforms:
For platforms like Wix, Squarespace or Shopify, adding the tracking code is usually possible through their own settings panel. Here are the steps:
- Wix: Go to your Wix dashboard, click "Settings" and then "Tracking & Analytics". Add your Google Analytics code here.
- Squarespace: Go to "Settings" > "Advanced" > "Code Injection" and paste the tracking code in the header section.
- Shopify: In your Shopify dashboard, go to "Online shop" > "Preferences" and paste the code into the Google Analytics field.
Step 4: Verify that everything works
Now that you've installed the tracking code, it's important to check that everything is working properly. Fortunately, Google Analytics itself provides a way to verify this.
- Open Google Analytics and go to the Realtime view.
- Visit your website in a new tab.
- If everything is set up correctly, you should see an active user appear in your Realtime view within seconds. This means that Google
- Analytics successfully tracks your website traffic.
- If you see no activity, check that you have placed the code in the right place and that you have not made any typos.
Step 5: Set goals and reports
Now that Google Analytics is properly integrated on your website, you can do much more than just track the number of visitors. One of the most powerful features is goal setting. This allows you to measure the success of specific actions on your website, such as newsletter sign-ups or purchases.
- Go to the Administrator panel in Google Analytics.
- Under the "View" column, choose "Goals" and click "New goal".
- Here you can set different goals, such as completing a purchase, a subscription or a specific page visit.
- In addition, you can create customised reports to track the data that matters most to you. This gives you better insight into how your visitors behave and which marketing efforts are effective.
You're done!
Congratulations! If you have completed all these steps, you should now have Google Analytics running successfully on your website. This powerful utility provides you with valuable insights that can help you optimise your website, improve your marketing strategy and ultimately achieve more conversions.

I contacted Wout as part of a mini RFP where he came out on top in a selection of 13 competitors. He was not the cheapest but stood head and shoulders above the competition in terms of responsiveness, clarity, transparency, helpfulness and willingness to listen.
From the start of my project, it turned out to be precisely these qualities that ensured that every question, every suggestion and the countless times I changed my mind were calmly and openly met and resolved by Wout.
Each time, he managed to clarify my sometimes confused suggestions, offer some solutions and then, above all, implement them at lightning speed (even "on the spot" in some cases).
His communication is calm, friendly, never pedantic or unnecessarily complicated. He is approachable, always accessible and keeps his appointments.
He will also explain his views on certain decisions and frame them with the necessary diplomacy.
He kept me informed at every step of the progress he had made, the next steps and the actions I still needed to take myself.
And the result is a website that runs flawlessly and that I can be incredibly proud of. NPS 10/10.
