How to choose the right keywords for SEO in your blog posts
Tips 'n tricks about the web, digital trends, and online marketing
Writing a blog post can be an art in itself, but to ensure that your posts are also found by your target audience, SEO (search engine optimisation) is essential. One of the most important parts of SEO is choosing the right keywords. These words and phrases determine whether your content comes up in search results. But how do you choose the best keywords for your blog posts? In this guide, you will discover step by step how to go about it.
What are keywords and why are they important?
Keywords are the words or phrases people use to find something through a search engine like Google. For example, if you write a blog post about "vegan recipes", you want people looking for vegan cooking inspiration to be able to find your article.
Good keywords help search engines understand what your content is about. The better your keywords match your target audience's search intentions, the more likely your blog post will rank high in search results. And the higher you rank in search results, the more traffic (read: potential customers) you attract to your website.
Step 1: Start brainstorming
Choosing the right keywords starts with a brainstorming session. First, figure out exactly what your blog post is about. Write down all the terms, phrases and topics related to it. Ask yourself: what would I type into Google myself if I searched for this topic?
Use a tool like Google Suggest (the suggestions you see when you start typing in the search bar) to see what related searches exist. This can give you new ideas for possible keywords.
Step 2: Use search tools
After the brainstorming session, it's time to dig a little deeper. Use a search tool such as Google Keyword Planner, Semrush, or Ahrefs. These tools give you insight into how often certain keywords are searched for and the level of competition for those keywords.
Note two things here:
- Search volume: How often is a particular keyword searched for each month? A keyword with a high search volume can bring in a lot of traffic, but it can also mean that there is a lot of competition.
- Competition: How many other websites are competing for this keyword? Keywords with a lot of competition can be difficult to rank for. Find a balance between search volume and competition.
A smart strategy is to focus not only on the most obvious keywords, but also on so-called long-tail keywords. These are longer, more specific searches (for example, "healthy vegan recipes for beginners"). While these may be less frequently searched for, competition is usually lower and visitors searching on such keywords are often more likely to take action.
Step 3: Analyse search intent
Now that you have a list of possible keywords, it is important to understand what the user's search intent is. Why are people searching for this specific keyword? Do they want to buy something, do they want to gather information, or are they looking for a specific service?
There are different types of search intentions:
- Informative: The user wants more information on a topic (e.g. "how to make vegan pancakes").
- Commercial: The user is shopping around for a purchase (e.g. "best vegan cookbook").
- Transactional: The user wants to buy something directly (e.g. "buy vegan cookbook").
Make sure your content and keywords match your target audience's search intent. If people are looking for information, write an in-depth and valuable blog post. Are they ready to buy something? Then make sure your blog post invites a purchase.
Step 4: Check your competition
A good way to determine which keywords work for you is to look at your competitors. Analyse what keywords they are using in their blog posts and content. You can easily do this by using a keyword tool like Ahrefs or SEMrush to analyse your competitors' pages.
In doing so, pay attention to the keywords on which they rank, and see if you see an opportunity to perform better or differently. You might even discover some keywords you hadn't considered before.
Step 5: Integrate your keywords properly
Choosing the right keywords is only half the job. Now you need to make sure you incorporate these words correctly in your blog post. Here are a few places where your keywords absolutely must appear:
- The title of your blog post
- The introduction to your article (preferably in the first paragraph)
- Subheads (like this one here)
- The URL of the page
- Alt texts of images
- The meta description
However, make sure your keywords feel natural and not forced. Google loves well-written, valuable content. Too many keywords (also known as keyword stuffing) can even have a negative effect on your ranking.
Step 6: Monitor and optimise
SEO is not a one-off activity. After your blog post is live, it is important to monitor the performance of your chosen keywords. See which keywords are performing well and which are scoring less well. You can do this with tools such as Google Search Console.
Optimise your content where necessary and keep adjusting keyword strategy according to the latest trends and insights.
Conclusion: Ready to take your SEO to the next level?
Choosing the right keywords for SEO in your blog posts is essential to be found better by your target audience. The process requires research, analysis and optimisation, but the results will be more than worth it.
