Where everything started
It all started on 4 February 2004, when a young student called Mark Zuckerberg went to Harvard University. No one expected this to be the beginning of a new way of connecting. So it was 20 years ago that Facebook was born, a platform that brought with it a world of change.
Where did it all start?
The pioneering years (2004-2009)
In the early days of Facebook, the platform was only for Harvard students intended, but it soon spread to other universities and eventually to the rest of the world. In 2007, for example, Facebook opened its doors to the general public, allowing people of could connect all ages and backgrounds. Photos, status updates and the rise of the 'Like' button quickly became hallmarks of the Facebook experience. Let's face it, you probably already used that button, but maybe not as early as 2007.
Globalisation and evolution (2010-2015)
The arrival of the smartphone brought a new phase in Facebook's evolution. Its mobile app quickly grew to become an essential part of everyday life, allowing users around the world to always and everywhere connected could remain. During this period, Facebook not only pulled out Instagram, but also Whatsapp in. This then provided an even greater influence and reach.
Challenges and changes (2016-2020)
Growth is not without ups and downs, for instance Facebook had to deal with growing commentary on issues surrounding privacy, fake news and the platform influence on society. Even with these problems, the company introduced innovative features such as live video, 360-degree photos and the rise of groups, which further changed the way people create and consume content.
Facebook's effect on digital marketing
Since its inception, Facebook has not only transformed the way we connect with each other, but also the marketing world turned upside down. With a user base of billions of people around the world, the platform offers marketers an unrivalled opportunity to reach and engage their target audience.

Today's day
On Sunday, 4 February, on its 20th anniversary, Facebook secured a place as a one of the world's largest technology companies. The platform had already 6.30 million users in Belgium in early 2023 and has only increased since then. Globally, the platform has more than 2.8 billion monthly active users. Innovation is also still on the rise, with features such as Metaverse which is already much talked about. We are already curious to see what this will give.
Facebook has had people for 20 years connected, opinions formed and stories shared. Although the platform has changed over the years, it remains a strong player in the digital landscape. We are already eagerly awaiting the latest developments. Facebook's journey has not been nothing - from a student's room to a global phenomenon that has changed the way we communicating has transformed.
